Nelson Mandela in his 6th day in hospital, his health continues to improve

JOHANNESBURG, 14 JUN – South Africa’s former president Nelson Mandela, 94 years-old, is in his 6th day in hospital. However, according to President Zuma who paid his visit to the anti-apartheid hero yesterday he is improving though he is still in serious condition. “Madiba’s health continues to improve but his condition remains serious,” said Zuma in a statement. Since December this is his fourth time being admitted in the hospital for lung infection.

PRETORIA, 10 JUN – Nelson Mandela has been hospitalizing for 3 days for complications related to a lung infection. The leader of the anti-Apartheid movement is in serious condition. As BBC reports, the relatives of Mandiba have visited him and have said he is in good mood. It’s the fourth time since December that Mandela, 94 years old, was hospitalized, again for lung infections. The local press and agencies reported that the whole country is praying for him. Nelson Mandela is the father of contemporary South Africa, he spent 27 years in prison because of the ANC membership.

Violence, crimes and racism are making South Africans less sensitive

JOHANNESBURG, 7 JUN – Occurrence of violence, crimes and racism all over the country seem to have become an ordinary scene to South Africans. The Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria released a report: “We fear that xenophobic attacks are becoming regular phenomena, and the South African population is becoming increasingly desensitised,” the organization said. In addition “We need to start formulating plans on how to create better awareness around xenophobia, and disseminate information about the scope and protection of the South African Constitution.“ The case of 17-year-old Anene Booysen who was raped, the unrest in the country’s mining belt which killed dozens of people, the death of at least 20 boys during initiations at school are among the outbreaks of violence that hit the country.

South Africa: Two government officials suspended for elephant poaching

JOHANNESBURG, 6 JUN – Amidst the government’s campaign to fight elephant poaching, two conservation officials in North West province were suspended and at risk of charges for violation of norms and standards of the National Environmental Management Act. Allegedly, the two were involved in the illegal capture of nine elephants in March when two of those were killed. In line with its effort to curb the illegal killing of rhinos and elephants, the government also carried out poisoning rhino’s horn with parasiticides and pink paint to keep poachers away from the endangered animals.

Over one hundred Chinese illegal gold miners under arrest in Ghana

ACCRA, 6 JUN – 124 Chinese miners were arrested in Ghana because of illegal residency. The local Chinese embassy officials have confirmed that the persons detained were without a visa. Since April the police have increased their operations against the Asian community illegally engaged in the extraction of gold. As reported by the Global Time, in the past two months, “the police will encourage or incite local villagers to engage in looting against Chinese, which has resulted in many fellow county compatriots being robbed and subject to physical abuse by locals. Some of their passports and documents have been destroyed and some lost during the arrests.” Many of them were robbed and experienced physical violence and intimidation. In recent years the discovery of big quantities of gold in the region in Ghana has attracted thousands of illegal immigrants.
